Maojian Green Tea Story

Xinyang Maofeng, also known as Yumao Peak, is a type of green tea and one of the top ten famous teas in China. It is also a famous specialty of Henan Province and mainly produced in Shiahe District (formerly Xinyang City), Pingqiao District (formerly Xinyang County) and Luoshan County. It was created by Han ethnic tea farmers and officially named "Xinyang Maofeng" in the early years of the Republic of China, due to the high quality of Benshan Maofeng tea produced by the five major tea societies in the Xinyang tea area.

During the Tang Dynasty, Lu Yu, the Sage of Tea, listed Xinyang as one of the eight major tea-producing regions in China in his book "The Classic of Tea".
During the Song Dynasty, the famous writer Su Dongpo praised Xinyang tea as "the best in Huainan".
During the Qing Dynasty, Xinyang Maofeng tea had already become one of the famous teas in China.
In 1990, the Xinyang Maofeng brand participated in a national competition and won first place for the overall quality of green tea. Xinyang Maofeng is known as the "King of Green Tea" and has consistently been ranked as the third most valuable public brand in China's tea industry for many years.
In 2017, according to the Chinese regional tea brand value evaluation, Xinyang Maofeng ranked second on the brand value list with a value of 5.991 billion yuan.
In 2019 marked the day that Xinyang Maofeng  tea was selected for inclusion in China's prestigious agricultural brand directory.
In 2021, it was selected into the third batch of national famous, special and new agricultural products list in 2021.
In 2022, it was selected into the 2022 agricultural brand boutique cultivation plan.

Identification of new and old Maojian green tea

Appearance: The color of new tea is fresh and bright, with a green gloss, a strong and lively fragrance, and obvious white hair; while the color of aged tea is darker, with a dim or even black gloss, heavy white hair loss, a low and dull fragrance, and no fresh taste.

Tea soup: The soup of new tea is fresh, light green, bright, with a fresh and lasting aroma, a strong and long-lasting taste, and a fresh green and clear bottom; while the soup of aged tea is lighter in color, with a lower and less refreshing fragrance, a weaker taste, a dull and dark bottom, and it may turn yellow after 5 minutes if not stored properly.

Historical legends

During the Tang Dynasty, the famous tea book "The Classic of Tea" by Lu Yu and the historical supplement "National History Supplement" by Li Zhao both recorded Yiyang tea as a famous tea at the time.
In the Song Dynasty, "The Annals of the Ming Dynasty-Shi Hou Zhi" and "The Classic of Tea Discourse" by Emperor Huizong Zhao Ji both listed Xinyang tea as a famous tea.
During the Yuan Dynasty, "Wenxian Tongkao" by Ma Duanlin recorded famous teas such as Dongshou, Qianshan, and Boci produced in Guangzhou.
During the Ming Dynasty, there were few records on famous teas.
During the Qing Dynasty, tea production rapidly recovered. The mid-Qing Dynasty was another period of rapid development in tea production in Henan Province. Tea-making skills gradually improved and tea quality became more refined, resulting in the appearance of the delicate Xinyang Maofeng tea in the late Qing Dynasty.
